The History of Municipal Socialism

Welcome to a guest lecture in English June 10, 2024. Professor Shelton Stromquist presents his book Claiming the City, about the history of the labor movement and in particular municipal socialism in a number of countries, among them Sweden.

For more than a century, municipal socialism has fired the imagination of workers struggling to make cities livable and democratic. At every turn, certain elites challenged their right to rule.

Free of charge, no pre-registration required.

Welfare Services and Urban Political Culture in Nordic countries

Since the Middle Ages, welfare services have been organized on a local level, in particular in cities. This welfare was expression for participation rights and formed thus a part of the urban fabric, which eventually changed the ways cities look like. Welfare is part of urban settings, it is inherently urban, as urbanness is the result of a spatial construction of welfare units (Castell). In 2023 and 2024 we want to organize three workshops on the history of welfare cities in the long perspective.
